11:00am-11:50am daily virtual classes

Love video games? Interested in knowing WHY you love them or what types of games you tend to stick to? In this online camp, you’ll learn about the different major types of video games and the subgenres within each one, along with proper video game terminology and vocabulary. Discuss some of your favorite games and categorize them by type, noticing what other genres are included in gameplay beyond just the game’s main type. Analyze the most popular games of all time (like Zelda, Mario, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and more) and the most popular games today to discover what makes them so popular and how game creators make certain games “addicting” to play. At the end of the virtual camp you will have come up with a proposal for your own theoretical video game, including the story, characters and setting, game type and features of gameplay.

In the first two online meetings, our main focus will be understanding and discussing the various types of video games and what games we are familiar with that fall into each category. The next two online meetings will focus on analyzing the most popular games today and the most popular games of all time, what types of games those are, and what features of games make them popular or “addicting.” The final meeting will feature the presentation of each learner’s game proposal that they worked on throughout the course of the camp.

For ages 9-15. Participants can join from a PC, Mac, iPad, Chromebook or any other type of notebook computer; smartphones are not recommended. We will incorporate a few Kahoot quizzes throughout the class, so a having second device like a smartphone handy to join those quizzes from will be ideal.
